いつものように家を出た。
細い鎖が手首に絡みついていた。
でも軽いから気にもならなかった。
途中、友だちと待ち合わせをしていた。
友だちはラクダ。
それもフタコブの。
ラクダはバス停の横にしゃがんでいた。
「おっはよー！」
あたしは友だちに手を振った。

ラクダは極端に口数が少ない。
返事してくれるだけでもマシな方だ。
バス停には長い人の列ができていて
皆、首や肩に太い鎖が絡みついていた。
（････かわいそうに）
あたしはラクダの背にまたがった。
「乗ったよ」
「うん」
ぐらぐら揺れながらラクダは立ち上がる。
振り落とされたら大変だ。
あたしは友だちのコブにしがみついた。
すると手首の鎖がほどけて地面に落ちた。
その程度の鎖だったわけだ。
バス停の人たちが羨ましそうに見ている。
「しゅっぱーつ！」

ラクダは学校へ向かっていた。
前方に校舎の屋根が見えてきた。
真っ黒だ。鎖がとぐろを巻いている。
なんだか気分まで重くなってきた。
どうしようかな、と考えていたら
同じ道を同級生の男の子が歩いている。
「おっはよー！」
ビクッとして男の子は振り向いた。

まぶしそうにあたしを見上げる。
「なによ。朝の挨拶もできないの？」
「ああ、おはよう」
「ふん。もう遅いわよ」
自分でも生意気と思うが、やめられない。
「みたいだね。完全に遅刻だ」
知らなかった。
そんな時刻だったのか。
そういえば彼には鎖が絡みついてない。
あたしは嬉しくなった。
「ねえ、これから土手まで行かない？」
ちょっと驚いた表情の男の子。
少しは迷いがあるらしい。
「いいけど、ひとつ条件がある」
子どものくせに大人びた口をきく。
でもあたし、そういうのきらいじゃない。
「なによ？」
男の子はぐるりと背後にまわった。
それからラクダの尻尾をつかんで
「ぼくも乗せてよ」
あたしのかわりにラクダが返事をした。
「うん」
で、また今日も学校、さぼっちゃった。

The Chain
"Mommy, I'm going!"
