僕は双子の家庭教師になった。
顔も体つきもそっくりなふたりの女の子。
いわゆる一卵性双生児の姉妹だ。
しかも、どちらも登校拒否児。
双子はなんでも知っているので
僕はなんにも教えることがないのだった。
どんな問題でも自分たちで判断できた。
そうとしか思えないのだった。
「先生。学校の勉強はいいの」
母親が部屋を出ると、そう言うのだった。
「そんなのどうでもいいのよ」
優秀な家庭教師がいればいい。
つまり、母親を安心させたいだけなのだ。
実際、学力は標準以上だった。
姉妹間での情報交換のスピードは速く、
ふたりだけにしか理解できない言葉を使う。
オリジナルの身振りや手話まで駆使する。
テレパシーだろうか、と思うことさえある。
「知らないことは本やパソコンで調べるから」
この家には広い図書室があって
ことに辞典類は下手な公立図書館より豊富だ。
彼女たちは勝手に勉強したり遊んだりする。
それに僕が参加すると邪魔なのだ。
母親の前で家庭教師らしく振る舞うこと、
それが僕の唯一の仕事なのだった。
しかし、僕にもプライドというものがある。
なにか教えられることがあるはずだ。
夢中で勉強しているらしい姉妹の背後で
僕はおもむろに服を脱ぎ始める。
「この部屋、なんだか暑いな」
上着を脱ぎ、下着も全部脱いでしまう。
そして、裸のまま姉妹のまわりを歩きまわる。
「ああ、暑い。とっても暑いな」
ただグルグルまわるだけでなく、
途中、いろんな奇妙なポーズをとった。
さすがの姉妹も僕に興味を持ち始めたようだ。
僕は双子の姉妹の熱い視線を肌に感じながら
逆立ちやトンボ返りまでして見せた。
「なかなか立派じゃないの」
片方が感心すると、もう一方も同意した。
「そうね。前の家庭教師よりはね」

A Tutor
I became a tutor for a twin.
