夜、ふと目を覚ますと
どこか遠く、かすかに音がする。
場違いな金属の音。
風鈴の音ではなく、錫杖の音。
錫杖は、頭に鉄の環がついた古風な杖。
それを突くと、ジャランと音がする。
こんな夜遅く、こんな住宅街を
時代錯誤な坊主が歩いているのだろうか。
どうでもいいが眠れない。
錫杖の音が大きくなった気がする。
眠れないので、寝床から起き上がり
用を足して、手を荒い、再び寝床に入る。
錫杖の音。
また錫杖の音。
さらにまた錫杖の音。
なんという音。かなり近い。
あの十字路のあたりだろうか。
ゆっくりと近づいているらしい。
もう家の前まで来ている。
いや。もっと近い。
窓の外、庭にいるような気がする。
まさか、そんなはずはない。
しかし、この錫杖の音。
いや。もっと近い。
耳を聾する錫杖の音。
枕元だ。
腕を伸ばせば届くだろう。
だが、動かせない。
鉄の環の金縛り。
そして、錫杖が突き下ろされる。
