小学校の大きな体育館。
生徒たちが縦一列に並んでいる。
正面には白衣を着た若い医者。
看護師は脱脂綿で腕を消毒している。
今日は予防注射の日。
医者の前に立つと泣き出す子もいる。
「大丈夫。痛くないよ」
子どもは医者の言葉なんか信じない。
「だって、注射の針がまっすぐで怖いよ」
駄々をこねて泣き止まない。
思わず苦笑する医者。
「それじゃ、この針を曲げてあげるね」
医者は注射針を指でつまみ、力をこめる。
注射針は釣針のように曲がってしまった。
「さあ。これでもう怖くないね」
「････うん」
怖くても諦めるしかないのだろう。
子どもはしっかり目を閉じる。
「すぐに済むよ」
医者の声がする。
「しかし、曲げすぎて刺しにくいな････」
そんな呟きも聞こえる。
ともかく医者は「つ」の字のように曲がった注射針を
苦労して子どもの腕に刺す。
「ほら。もう終わりだよ」
突然、子どものものすごい悲鳴。
「あっ、ごめん」
頭をかきながら、笑って謝る若い医者。
「つい癖で、手もとに引いちゃった」
