修行僧

深山にて修行中の僧侶ありけり。

学友との論争から逃れ、人に問われる。

「あそこで先（さき）んずれば勝ちでなかったか」

すると、この僧侶

「実質を伴わねば結末に意味なし」

などと宣（のたま）えり。

A Monk

There was a monk who was training in a deep mountain.

He escaped from the controversy with his alumnus
and was questioned by people.
"Did not you win if you were ahead of that?"

Then the monk said.
"If there is no real, there is no point in the result."
