裏山の畑に妖精が生えた。
トンボの羽、ハチドリの口、リスの尻尾。

畝にきちんと並んで生えていた。
ニンジンの種を蒔いたはずなのに。
「どれ。一本、食べてみるか」
引き抜くと、妖精は悲鳴をあげた。
根元から赤い雫が垂れ落ちた。
「あれま。まだ早かったかな」
もとどおりに植えなおしておいた。
村祭りの後、また裏山にのぼった。
畑には妖精の姿はなかった。
畝には穴がきれいに並んでいた。
今度は遅すぎたのだ。
植えなおした一本だけが倒れていた。
すっかり枯れて、見る影もない。
「うまくいかねえもんだな」
畑に腰を下ろし、空を見上げた。
奇妙な鳥の声がこだましていた。
