遅れて到着したら、すでに行列ができていた。
私はあわてて行列の最後尾に並んだ。
行列は建物の角を曲がって続いており
ここからでは先頭まで見えなかった。
余裕を持って家を出たのに
途中、電車を乗り違え、しかも
しばらく気付かず遠回りしたため
予定より随分と遅れてしまったのだ。
行列の流れは少し進んでは止まり
止まっては少しだけ進む。
ようやく建物の角まで着いた頃には
すでに夕刻になっていた。
角を曲がっても行列は延びており
さらに先の角を曲がって見えなくなっていた。
通りの反対側には別の行列ができていた。
その行列は先の角を反対側に曲がって続いていた。
私は心配になってしまった。
他に行列があるとは思わず
あわててこの行列に並んでしまった。
あちらの行列はどこへ続いているのだろう。
「あの、すみません。これ、なんの行列ですか？」
外国人らしい通行人が尋ねてきた。
私は答えられなかった。
私の前の人たちも後ろの人たちも
なぜか誰も答えてはくれないのだった。

I arrived late, already a line was made.
I panicked at the end of the line.
The line continued
by turning around the corner of the building,
and from here it could not be seen to the beginning.
Although I left home with plenty,
I missed the train on the way,
I had to circle without noticing for a while,
so I was behind schedule considerably.
The flow of the line goes a little and then stops,
after a stop it goes a little.
By the time I finally arrived at the corner of the building,
it was already evening.
Even when the corner was bent, the line extended,
and furthermore it turned out not to be seen
by turning the corner.
There was another line on the other side of the street.
That line continued bending in the opposite corner.
I got worried.
I did not expect there was any other line,
and in a rush, I ran into this line.
Where is that line going?
"Oh, sorry, what line is this?"
A passerby who seemed to be a foreigner asked.
I could not answer.
Neither my former nor the people behind me,
nobody answered me why.
