無精者なので無精ひげを生やしている。
面倒臭いからひげそりはしない。
気になるとハサミで切る。
髪も同様。
床屋へ行ったのは小学生までだ。
頬やまぶたなど
位置的に見っともない部分は毛抜きで抜く。
手持ち無沙汰だったりすると
指の爪で挟んで抜いたりもする。
ある日、パソコンをいじりながら
あごひげを片手でつまんでいた。
すると、妙に長い毛に触れた。
条件反射のように引き抜く。
････つもりだったが
その毛がなぜかズルズル伸びるのだった。
抜けないままの毛の先端を見ることさえできた。
小指ほどの長さ、色は真っ白。
さらに引っ張ると、さらに伸びる。
どう考えてもおかしい。
そこで思い出したのが都市伝説。
皮膚から綿が出る、耳から糸が出る、そんな話。
それによれば、耳から出た糸を引っ張り続けると
やがてプツンと音を立てて糸が切れ、
同時に視力を失うのだそうだ。
思わずゾッとして、その白い毛から指を離す。
おそるおそる根もと近くをハサミで切る。
糸ではない。
ごく普通の白髪に見えた。
それだけ。
以後、その近くのひげは
なるべく引き抜かないようにしている。
しかし、それにしても、あれはなんだったんだ？
いまだに謎である。
