だまし絵、トリックアートなどと呼ぶが
絵とは、もともとそういうもの。
たとえば、こちらを見ている顔の人物画は
どこから見ても、こちらを見ている。
そのように見える平面画の錯覚なのだ。
さて、今この部屋の壁には
二枚の絵が向き合うように飾ってある。
互いを見る、よく似た二枚の肖像画。
一枚がオリジナル、もう一枚がその模写。
ただし、どちらがオリジナルかはわからない。
両者が微妙に異なるのは誰の目にもわかるが
一方が他方より優れている、とは言い難い。
また、仮に明解な優劣の差があるとしても
それがオリジナルを決める絶対条件にはならない。
オリジナルの不備を補う模写かもしれないからだ。
まるで詐欺師同士のだまし合いのように
黙ったまま互いに相手を見合う二枚の肖像画。
そんなふうに絵が飾ってあるこの部屋に入ると
なかなかに居たたまれないものがある。
