「もみじ」という名の喫茶店があった。
店内の壁に額縁が飾ってあった。
ありふれた水彩の風景画だった。
その絵は毎週土曜日になると変わった。
近所の貧乏画家が差し替えるのだ。
一枚で一週間、コーヒーが飲める。
それが店主と画家との約束なのであった。
「そのうち、もっと価値が出るよ」
コーヒーを飲みながら画家は笑った。
ある土曜日、画家は来なかった。
「とうとう絵が売れたのかな」
なじみの客がそう呟いた。
店主はちょっと首をかしげた。
日曜日は喫茶店の定休日だった。
「あいつ、死んだんだって」
月曜日、なじみの客が店主に伝えた。
「交通事故で、土曜日に」
店主は壁の額縁を見上げた。
それは先週の絵と違っていた。
まっ赤なもみじの絵だった。

The picture frame was decorated
on the wall inside the store.
It was a landscape painting of common watercolors.
The picture changed every Saturday.
The neighboring poor painter will replace it.
He can drink coffee for a week in a piece.
That was a promise
between shopkeepers and painters.
"One day, more value comes out."
The painter laughed while drinking coffee.
One Saturday, the painter did not come.
"Has his picture finally sold?"
A familiar customer muttered so.
The owner shaved a head a little.
Sunday was a regular holiday at the coffee shop.
"He's dead."
A familiar customer told the shopkeeper Monday.
"Traffic accident, on Saturday."
The shopkeeper looked up
at the picture frame of the wall.
It was different from the picture of last week.
It was a red maple picture.
