次の患者は幽霊だった。
「先生、どうも具合が悪くて････」
若いナースが床に倒れた。

悲鳴をあげ、みんな逃げ出した。
だが、私は医者だ。
患者を見捨てて逃げるわけにはいかない。
それに、腰が抜けて立てないのだ。
おそるおそる幽霊の手首に触れてみた。
冷たかった。やはり脈はなかった。
はだけた胸に聴診器を当ててみた。
「息を吸って、止めて、はいて････」
生臭いにおいがしただけだった。
「いつから具合が悪いのですか？」
「亡くなるちょっと前から････」
どうやら自覚しているらしい。
死を宣告しても無駄なようだ。
「どんな具合に悪いのですか？」
「なんとも、死にきれないくらい････」
ふざけているのだろうか。

腐乱していた。見なければよかった。
