電話の声に心当たりはなかった。

「無事に帰して欲しければ身代金を用意しろ」

電話の声はかまわず喋り続け
俺の月収に相当するほどの金額を要求した。
「あの、なんと申しますか」
「おまえがハチコのファンであることは調査済みだ」

「ファンなら、彼女にもしものことがあってはなるまい」

俺はあわててメモを取った。

そして、電話は切れた。
等身大ポスターのハチコが、目の前で微笑んでいた。
確かに俺は彼女の熱烈なファンだ。
しかし、関係ないだろ。

もし無視したらどうなる。
もし無事に彼女が保護されたらどうなる。
預金通帳を見下ろし、俺はすっかり考え込んでしまった。

I was not aware of the voice of the phone.

The voice of the phone continued to snarl
and demanded an amount equivalent to my monthly income.
