奇妙な難破船だった。
その形状はともかく
置かれた位置が不可解だった。
海底に沈んでいたわけではない。
海から遠く、大陸の奥深く
砂漠のド真ん中で座礁していたのだ。
ただし、それを座礁と呼べるとするならば
ではあるが。
「こりゃ、かなり古いな」
調査団の団長が呟く。
「中世の大型帆船みたいですね」
と、若い調査員。
「まったく、信じられん話だ」
「あの旗は？」
「ああ。マンガとしか思えん」
黒地に頭蓋骨および交差した二本の大腿骨。
あまりに典型的な海賊旗である。
舷側には砲門まである。
海賊船と認めるしかあるまい。
「しかし、なんでまた････」
団長は途方に暮れる。
「昔、ここが海底だったとか」
「････十億年ほど前なら、あるいはな」
砂漠のド真ん中に難破船があるばかり。
「誰か、俺たちの反応を見物して
どこかで笑ってる奴がいそうだな」
団長は、疑わしそうに辺りを見まわすのだった。

Shipwreck in the Desert
It was a strange shipwreck.
Whatever the shape,
the position where it was placed was mysterious.
It was not sunk to the sea floor.
It was far from the sea, deep in the continent,
aground in the middle of the desert.
