友だちの家に遊びに行った。
おもちゃの恐竜を見せてもらった。
手のひらサイズ、柔らかなゴム製。
のそのそ歩いたり、ジャンプしたりする。
濡れたものや温かなものが近くにあると
口をすぼめて突いたりもする。
指先を舐めて試してみたら
キツツキみたいに激しく突いてきた。
とてもかわいらしい。
なんだか僕も欲しくなった。
しばらく遊んでから友だちの家を出た。
そのまま近くにある店に入った。
段ボール箱や紙袋などが床や棚に無造作に置いてある。
あまりおもちゃ屋らしくなかった。
それに売り場はとても狭くて
店員の姿さえ見当たらなかった。
「ごめんください」
そんなふうに声をかけてみると、奥から大人が現れた。
顔のやせた貧相な男だった。
「なんだね？」
「おもちゃの恐竜を探しているんですけど」
店員の男はゆっくりと売り場を見まわす。
「ないね」
やっぱり。
そんな予感がしていたのだ。
気落ちして、その小さな店を出る。
道路を挟んだ向かい側に目をやると
ほとんど真正面に大きな店が建っていた。
それは、いかにもおもちゃ屋らしく見えた。
さっそく店に入ってみると
やはりおもちゃだらけなのだった。
「いらっしゃいませ」
同じ顔のふたりの店員が迎えてくれた。
同じように太っているので双子かもしれない。
すぐにおもちゃの恐竜は見つかった。
透明な袋に入っていて
壁のフックにぶら下がっていた。
手に取る。柔らかい。
値段も手頃だ。
「この恐竜、ひとつください」
「はい。ありがとうございます」
ふたりの店員は使い方を説明してくれた。
まず洗面器のようなものを持ち出す。
コーヒーみたいな色の液体が入っている。
そこにミルクを連想させる白い液体を注ぐ。
「混合の割合で柔らかさが違うんだよ」
製造方法まで教えてくれるのだった。
さすがに感心してしまった。
友だちみたいに話が盛り上がり
ふたりは僕に手品まで披露してくれた。
水の入ったグラスにコインを落とすと
コインがはじけてグラスから跳び出すのだ。
僕だって手品なら少々できる。
指先に挟んだ小物を消すやつだ。
グラスに落とす瞬間にコインを消したら
ふたりとも手を叩いて喜んでくれた。
楽しくなってしまう。
ところが、そのとき不意に
手に持っていた透明の袋が跳ね上がった。
中にいるおもちゃの恐竜が暴れ出したのだ。
きっと遊び仲間に加えて欲しいのだろう。
おもちゃの恐竜の体が
むくむく大きくなってゆく。
わざわざ見るまでもない。
それがなぜか僕には
はっきりとわかるのだった。
