ひとり、川のほとりにたたずんでいると
川上から賢者が流れてきた。
「助けてさしあげましょうか？」
私がたずねると
賢者はそっけなく
「わしのことはかまわんでくれ」
そのまま川下へ流されていった。
しばらくすると
今度は愚者が流れてきた。
「助けてやろうか？」
声をかけると
愚者は喜び
「うん。頼む」
私が川の中に入ると
愚者は私の腰にしがみつき
そのためバランスをくずして
私も一緒に流されてしまった。

On the Banks of the River
When I was standing alone on the banks of the river,
a wise man flowed from the river.
"Shall I help you?"
I asked him.
He replied with no mercy.
"Don't worry about me."
He was swept downstream as it was.
After a while, a fool flowed this time.
"Would you like to help?"
He was delighted when I called out.
"Yeah. I'll ask."
As I entered the river, he clung to my waist,
causing me to lose balance
and be swept away with me.
