早朝のオフィス。
主任が下請け会社の課長と会話してる。
これから地方へ出張らしい。
新製品製造現場の立会であろう。
だが、なんとなく気になることがある。
この主任はすでに退職したのではなかったか。
「昨日は飲んだの？」
下請け会社の課長が声をかけてきた。
「いいえ」愛想のない私。
「ああ、そう」つまらなそうな課長。
「近頃の文学というのは、こんなんでいいのかね」
近頃の文学は知らないが、昨日は飲む暇などなかったはず。
担当していた製品にクレームが発生したのだ。
いや、待てよ。
これから発生するのだったか。
事実の認識は曖昧であるが、いずれにせよ
酒を飲んでも問題の解決にはならない。
ふと気づくと、もう二人の姿はない。
その差し替えのように部長が出勤してきた。
額に汗をかいている。
「チョコレートはあるか？」
記憶を探る。冷蔵庫のイメージが浮かぶ。
「一枚だけあると思います」
「一枚だけ、ということはあるまい」
部長の声は怒りに満ちている。
そう言えば、四箱ほど購入したばかりだ。
なるほど、一枚だけでは納得しかねる。
変だ。これは何かある。
これまでの悩みが怒りに変わってゆく。
「クレームの原因はチョコレートですね」
部長は返事もしてくれない。
安易な責任転嫁を見抜かれたのであろうか。
私は、あわててデスクの引き出しを開ける。
そこにチョコレートの沼があった。
