若い漁師がひとり、湖に舟を出して
網を投げて魚をとっていた。
しかし今日は、いっこうに魚がかからない。
ようやく網にかかったと思ったら
引っかかっていたのは、一枚の手鏡。
古い銅鏡のようだが、錆びていない。
漁師が覗くと、自分の顔が映る。
なぜか空や湖面などの背景は映らない。
なかなか男前ではないか、と漁師は思った。
こんな好ましい顔はまたとあるまい。
漁師はしばらく手鏡を覗いていたが
ぬるぬるして生臭いので、湖面に捨てた。
いくら場所を変えて網を投げても
やはり魚は一匹もかからないのだった。
さっきとは離れた場所で再び手鏡がかかった。
そっくり同じ手鏡のように見える。
やはり自分の顔しか映らない。
気味悪くなり、漁師は手鏡を放り投げると
漁は諦め、さっさと引き上げた。
家に帰り、このことを家人に話すと
漁師の祖母にあたる老婆がひどく驚いた様子。
「それは竜神様の鏡に違いないよ」
「なんだい、そりゃ」
「その人の伴侶となる相手を映す鏡だよ」
「ばかばかしい。ただの鏡だったぞ」
「おまえ、自分の顔が映ったのかい」
「ああ、なかなか男前だったぞ」
「それはまた、なんということ」
「なんなんだよ、いったい」
老婆は目に涙を浮かべるのだった。
「おまえ、かわいそうにな」

The Companion Mirror
A young fisherman took a boat to the lake,
threw a net and took fish.
But today, no fish at all.
When he thought that it finally hit the net,
what was caught was a hand mirror.
It looks like an old copper mirror, but it is not rusted.
When he looks in, his face appears.
Somehow there is no background such as sky or lake surface.
The fisherman thought it was quite a handsome guy.
There will be no more such favorable faces.
The fisherman looked into the hand mirror for a while,
but because it slimy and fishy, he threw it onto the lake.
No matter how much he changed the place and threw the net,
there was no fish as it was.
A hand mirror was hooked again at a place far away from before.
It looks just like the same hand mirror.
After all it only shows his own face.
The fisherman became disgusting, threw the hand mirror,
threw the fishing and withdrew quickly.
When he returned home and told the family about this,
the grandmother of the fisherman, was terribly surprised.
"It must be the mirror of the dragon god."
"What's that?"
"It's a mirror reflecting who you are that person's mate."
"Ridiculous, it was just a mirror."
"You, did you see your face?"
"Oh, it was quite handsome."
"What is that again?"
"What is it, what on earth?"
The old woman had tears in her eyes.
"You poor thing."
