南極大陸に一頭の白熊がいた。
すっかり老いぼれた雄の白熊だった。
なぜか氷原に一本の棒が立っていて
白熊はその棒のまわりを歩きまわっていた。
くたびれたようにぐるぐるまわっていた。
いつまでも飽きずにまわり続けていた。
南極の空にはオーロラが美しくひるがえり
その上に神様が腰かけていた。
しばらく白熊の様子を眺めていたのだ。
「おい。そこの死にそうな老いぼれの熊」
神様に声をかけられ、白熊は立ち止まる。
「おまえ、そこでなにをしておるのだ？」
空を見上げ、やっと白熊は神様に気づく。
「ふん。変なやつだな」
「おまえに言われたくないぞ」
「あんた、そこで見ていてわからんのか？」
「さっぱりわからん」
「頭が悪いな。まあいい。教えてやる」
白熊は、これまでのいきさつを語った。
白熊はもともと北極に棲んでいたらしい。
ひとりで暮らしているうちに老いてしまい
老いた白熊は後悔していた。
若いうちに結婚しておけばよかった、と。
そんな白熊の前に悪魔が現われた。
「あなたを若返らせてあげましょう」
悪魔は白熊に約束した。
老いた白熊はむろん喜び、そのまま
南極大陸まで悪魔に連れてこられた。
つまり、白熊は悪魔にだまされたのだ。
「ここに日付変更線が引いてあります」
「なにも見えないぞ」
「そうなのです。見えない線なのです」
「それは偉いものだな」
「これを越えて西へ行けば昨日になります」
「ほほう」
「つまり、一日若返るわけです」
「なるほど」
悪魔の言葉を白熊は信じてしまった。
「このまわりをぐるぐるまわりなさい」
悪魔は極点あたりに棒を突き立てた。
「時計の針の進む逆向きにまわるのです」
「そうするとどうなるのだ」
「あなたはどんどん若くなります」
「それはすばらしい」
そして、悪魔は去った。
老いた白熊は南極大陸に残された。
以来、白熊はこの棒のまわりを
ぐるぐるまわり続けているという。
若返るはずが、むしろ老けてしまった。
ボケているので、それに気づかないのだ。
「なるほど。まったくおまえは賢い熊だ」
この老いた白熊を哀れに思った神様は
そっと少しずつ神秘の力を使った。
白熊の願いをかなえてやったのだ。
老いた白熊は見る見る若返っていった。
「わあ、すごい！ 若返ったぞ」
若くなった白熊は大喜び。
「あいつ、やっぱりいい奴だったんだ」
悪魔に感謝しながら、白熊は駆け出した。
はるか遠い氷の地平線を目指し
若くてすてきな結婚相手を求めて。
オーロラに腰かけたまま神様は
いかにも満足そうに白熊を見送った。
それから、ゆうゆうと天に昇っていった。
やがて、時は流れた。
まだ棒は南極大陸の氷原に立っていた。
そのまわりを白熊が駆けまわっていた。
眼を血走らせ、ぐるぐると猛烈な速さで
時計の針の進む向きに駆けまわっていた。
あの若返った雄の白熊の姿だった。
しかも、まわる向きが逆。
狂っているとしか思えないのだった。
とんでもない失敗を神様はしたのだ。
白熊を南極大陸に残したまま去ってしまった。
大事な仕事を神様は忘れていたのだ。
若返った白熊を北極に返してやることを。
北極なら白熊も幸せになれたはずなのに。
白熊は南極大陸には生息していない。
少なくとも、雌の白熊は一頭もいない。
結婚などできるはずないのだ。
だから、南極大陸にひとり残された白熊は

A White Bear in Antarctica
There was a white bear in Antarctica.
It was a totally old male white bear.
Somehow one stick stood on the ice field and
the white bear was walking around that stick.
It was round and round like it was tired.
It never got bored and kept going around forever.
In the sky of Antarctica, the aurora got beautifully,
and God was sitting on it.
God was looking at the scene of the white bear for a while.
"Hey, old bear who is likely to die there."
God speaks, the white bear stops.
"What are you doing there?"
Look up at the sky, finally the white bear noticed God.
"Well, it's a weird fellow."
"I do not want you to say that from you."
"You see, you can not understand it there?"
"I do not understand it at all"
"You are bad, I do not care. I will tell you."
The white bear told the history.
The white bear was originally living in the Arctic region.
As the white bear grew older while living alone,
he regretted that he should have married before he was young.
A demon appeared in the front of such a white bear.
"Let me rejuvenate you."
The demon promised the white bear.
The old white bear was obviously delighted,
and was brought to Antarctica as it was by the devil.
In other words, the white bear was deceived by the devil.
"There is a date change line here."
"I can not see anything."
"Yes, it is an invisible line."
"That is a great thing."
"Beyond this, go to the west yesterday."
"I see."
"In other words, it rejuvenates for a day."
"I see."
The white bear has believed the word of the devil.
"Go around round this around."
The devil pierced the stick near the extreme point.
"It goes in the opposite direction of the hands of the clock."
"What will happen then?"
"You get younger and younger."
"that's nice."
And the devil went away.
The old white bear was left on Antarctica.
Since then, the white bear keeps circling around this stick.
He should be rejuven, he is rather aged.
He is blurred, so he does not notice it.
"Oh, you are a smart bear at all."
God who was sorry for this old white bear
gently used the power of mystery little by little.
God gave the wish of the white bear.
The old white bear was gradually rejuvenating.
"Wow, it's amazing! I have rejuvenated."
The young white bear was delighted.
"He was a nice guy after all."
Thanking the devil, the white bear ran away.
Looking for a young and wonderful marriage partner,
aiming at far horizons of the ice.
While sitting in the aurora God seemed satisfiedly
to see the white bear.
Then God rose to heaven graciously.
Eventually the time passed.
Still the stick was standing on the ice field of Antarctica.
The white bear was running around.
He swept the eyes,
circling around and went round the direction
of the hands of the clock with a furious speed.
It was the figure of the white bear of that rejuvened male.
Moreover, the turning direction is reversed.
He seems to be crazy.
The God did a terrible failure.
God left leaving the white bear on Antarctica.
God had forgotten the important work,
to return the rejuvenated white bear to the Arctic region.
In the Arctic region the white bear should have been happy.
White bears do not live in Antarctica.
At least there is no female white bears.
He can not get married.
Therefore, the white bear left alone on Antarctica
has to continue around this way.
