「この宇宙船は、まもなく爆発します。脱出してください」
避難ボートの乗船ゲートに殺到する船員たち。
「性別不問。若い順に乗れ！」
船長の怒鳴り声がする。
避難ボートの定員は乗船者の半数にも満たない。
最古参のおれは脱出を諦めた。
「どうしたんだ？」
「わかりません」
誰も事態を把握していないらしい。
通路を走り、操縦室に入る。
誰もいない。
管理パネルを見る。
「抜き打ち避難訓練、作動中」
そのように表示されている。
なんだこれは？
なにも聞いてないぞ。
抜き打ちだから事前に聞いていないとしても
避難訓練を抜き打ちにするとも事前に聞いてはいない。
しかし当然、船長は知っているはずだ。
操縦室を出て、通路を戻る。
悲鳴や怒声が聞こえる。
乗船ゲートは悲惨なことになっていた。
殴り合いの喧嘩が始まっていた。
船長は床に倒れている。
その床は血だまりになっていた。
「おい。やめろ！」
おれは怒鳴った。
誰も聞いていない。
その時、チャイムが鳴った。
