ほんの宝探しごっこのつもりだった。
そんなふうに冒険したい年頃だったのだ。
近所の山の崖崩れがあったみたいなところに
洞窟の穴があった。
その入り口は鉄の扉で塞がれていた。
丈夫そうな錠前も掛かってはいたが
扉の蝶番は錆びて壊れていた。
というか、誰か壊したに違いない。
そういうわけで僕は夏休みのある日
懐中電灯だけ持って、ひとり洞窟の中に入ったのだ。
しゃがんで歩けるくらいの高さで
狭い通路がまっすぐ奥へと延びていた。
しばらく進むと
両側に横穴のある場所に出た。
やはり噂は本当だったのだ。
戦時中、この洞窟は
防空壕としても使われていたそうだが
その昔は隠れキリシタンの教会だったという。
だから、通路が途中でクロスして
それぞれ行き止まりになり
全体で十字架の形になっているというのだ。
とにかく、そのまま前に進む。
だんだん天井が高くなってきて
やがて中腰なら立って歩けるようになった。
残念ながら、そこから先はよく憶えていない。
懐中電灯の電池が切れかけた記憶もあるから
おそらく途中で怖くなって引き返してしまったのだろう。
それとも････
いやいや、そんなことはあるまい。
なぜなら現在
僕はキリシタンでもクリスチャンでもないのだから。

Cave Cross

I took only a flashlight and entered the cave alone.
A narrow aisle extends straight back
at a height high enough to be crouched and walkable.
After going for a while, I came to a place
where there are side holes on both sides.
After all the rumor was true.
During the war, this cave was also used
as a bomb shelter, but it is also said that
it was a hidden Christian church in the past.
So, the passage crosses along the way,
and each ends up in the form of a cross as a whole.
Anyway, we just went ahead.
As the ceiling became higher,
I was able to stand and walk in the middle and back.
Unfortunately, I do not remember well from there.
There is also a memory of flashlight battery running out,
so I was probably scared and turned back on the way.
