どこかへ行こうとしていたのだ。
山だったか、その途中にある神社だったか
どうも忘れてしまった。
ともかく、そちらの方角へ行くには
右まわりと左まわりのふたつの道がある。
ただし、川の土手や水田があるために
とても歩きにくいが、真ん中を行く道もある。
子どもの頃にはよく通ったものだが
近頃は滅多に使うこともなくなっていた。
今回はその道を行くつもりだった。
それで、クワを持って家を出ようとすると
なぜかウサギが邪魔をする。
クワの刃の平らな面の上に
一羽のウサギが前足を乗せているのだ。
そういえば子どもの頃、父が山で拾ってきたのに
翌朝になって死なせてしまったウサギたちがいたな。
すると、やはり山へ行こうとしていたのだ。
地面すれすれを引きずらんばかりにして
クワを持って歩くと、ウサギも落ちずについてくる。
「ああ、連れて行かないでよ」
様子を見ていた妹が駄々をこねる。
妹はいないはずだが、現にいるのだから仕方ない。
どうしようかな、と困っていたら
ウサギが諦めたみたいに降りてくれた。
しかし、途方に暮れる。
はて、このウサギと一緒でないとしたら
なんの目的で向こうへ行けばいいのだろう。
つぶらな瞳のウサギと顔を見合わせる。
