第一回太陽ヨットレースは熾烈を極めた。
光が鏡に当たって反射すると、鏡に圧力が加わる。
これを光圧と呼ぶ。
太陽ヨットは、太陽からの光圧を推力源とする宇宙船のこと。
誤解されることが多いが、太陽風で飛ばされるわけではない。
太陽風は、太陽から吹き出す電気を帯びた気体の風だが
推進力として使えるほどエネルギーはないのだ。
近年、極めて軽量かつ極めて広い面積を保持できる薄膜鏡
および極めて高性能な薄膜太陽電池が開発された。
イオンの電荷を利用して加速するイオンエンジンとの併用により
宇宙空間における推進・姿勢制御が実用可能となった。
ただし、重量オーバーとなるのため、人は乗せられない。
プログラムとリモコン制御による無人宇宙船である。
コースに関して、途中経路の選択は自由。
地球の衛星軌道上にある宇宙ステーション近くのスタート地点から
火星の衛星軌道上にある宇宙ステーション近くのゴールまで。
レースは、3隻の太陽ヨットによって競われた。
出場は5隻だったが、うち2隻はスタートさえできず棄権した。
レース中、たとえ先頭に立つことができても
そのまま優位を維持することはできない。
後続のヨットが太陽との間に割り込んで影を落とす作戦を採れば
いくら進路変更を繰り返しても引き離すことは無理なのだ。
また、それが3隻なので、ゲーム理論として駆け引きが難しい。
････というわけで、第一回太陽ヨットレースは熾烈を極めた。
ただし、レース結果は誰も知らない。
こんな太陽ヨットレースを先進国が宇宙でやってる間に
世界最終戦争が地球上で勃発したからである。
