私は「核の申し子」なのだそうだ。
この高原には、あの大国の
核廃棄物の処理場が多く点在している。
私が生まれ育った土地の近くにもそれがあり
私の声が人と違うのは、そのせいだと言うのだ。
甲状腺異常だ、と。
子どもが大気中の放射性ヨウ素を吸い込むと
甲状腺の異常が多発するらしい。
甲状腺は喉のあたりにあり
蝶が翅を広げたような形をしている。
甲状腺では、ヨウ素を材料として
発育や新陳代謝などに欠かせない甲状腺ホルモンを作る。
そして、成長期にある子どもの甲状腺は
特にヨウ素を吸収しやすい、という。
近くの核廃棄物の処理場から実際に
放射性ヨウ素が大気中へ放出されたのかどうか
私は知らない。
でも、私の声が人並みでないのは、事実だ。
私の声は、この世界最大の高原の端から端まで届く。
世界一高い山脈を越えて渡るアネハヅルの群を
呼び寄せることだってできる。
私の歌声だけで
大規模な暴動を治めたことさえある。
神はいないかもしれない。
でも、核はある。
ならば、核の申し子として死ぬまで
私は歌い続けたい、と思う。
