庭には白い犬と黒い犬がいた。
白い犬小屋と黒い犬小屋もあるのだった。
なぜか白い犬は良い犬で
黒い犬は悪い犬ということであった。
それはともかく、ここは山荘である。
共同下宿としか思えないのだが
山荘であると主張されたら
宿泊者たるもの認めざるを得ない。
左右ふたつの部屋に分かれている。
右の部屋は自分の。
左の部屋は若い女の。
中央にある共同炊事場で自炊しながら
互いに他人として泊まっている。
ある日、ひとりの若い男がやって来た。
左の部屋の女の知り合いらしい。
にぎやかな話し声が聞こえてくる。
「君、いくつだったっけ？」
「19才でーす」
そういえば、彼女が痴漢に襲われて
警察官と話していたのを聞いたことがある。
「あなたの年齢は？」
「22才です」
つまり彼女は、相手が違うと
態度も年齢も異なるというわけだ。
「おい。あんた」
共同炊事場の流しで食器を洗っていたら
その若い男が因縁をつけてきた。
「あんたがそんな派手なパジャマ着てるから
おれが地味に見えてしまうじゃないか」
なるほど、自分は派手なパジャマを着ている。
かたや、相手は地味なパジャマだ。
しかし、それがなんだというのだ。
開いた窓から夏の積乱雲が見える。
むくむく腹が立ってくる。
そいつの襟首をつかんで睨みつけた。
「ふざけるな！」
おどしたつもりが、普段おどし慣れてないため
情けないくらい声が裏返っている。
それでも、相手は気が弱いのか
そこそこ怖気づいたようだ。
その時、女が駆け足で炊事場に現れた。
裸エプロン姿の彼女は気づかないのか無視しているのか
白い素肌の背中をこちらに向けたまま
黙って共同冷蔵庫の扉を開ける。
丸ごと入っている豚の頭部が
彼女の腋の下の隙間から見えた。
その見開かれた両目。
なにも起こらない静かな午後のひと時。
白い犬も黒い犬も眠っているのか
ちっとも吠えないのだった。
