ひとりの旅の僧侶が吹雪の山を歩いていた。
昼なお暗く、天狗や山姥が棲むという。
冬ならば、雪女が袖を引くという。
「お待ちなされ。そこなお坊様」
背中を凍らせるような冷たい声がした。
振り返ると、白装束の女の姿があった。
その美しさに僧侶は身動きできなくなった。
「お山へ、なんの用かえ」
女の吐いた白い息で、僧侶の足は凍りついた。
「私は、雪女に会いに来たのです」
「おやおや。なんでまた会いたいと」
女の白い手が触れ、僧侶の腕と肩は凍った。
「わたくしの、母上だからです」
女は吹雪のような白い息を吐いた。
その瞬間、僧侶は気を失った。
吹雪は止み、澄んだ月夜であった。
まわりの雪がとけ、僧侶は土の上にいた。
僧侶は生きていた。
雪女の姿はなかった。
僧侶の腹の上に、濡れた白装束があるばかり。
「やっと会えたというのに」
