中学時代、科学部に所属していた。
研究対象は伝統的にカワニナと決まっていた。
カワニナは小川に生息する巻貝で
ホタルの幼虫の餌になる。
当時、まだホタルは普通に見られた。
川辺にゴザを敷き、毛布や飲食物を用意して
キャンプみたいに「24時間観察」などしたものだ。
目印を付けた複数のカワニナの動きを
単位時間ごとに24時間連続チェックするのである。
三年生の時、部員はたった二人だけになってしまった。
とりあえず部長だが、リーダーシップはなく
放課後の理科室で遊んでばかりいた。
しかし、活動実績は残さなければならない。
夏休み明けに研究発表をしなければ････
夏休みに入ってからあわてて研究テーマを探し始めた。
そして、あろうことか、中学生のくせに
カワニナの精子の研究をすることになった。
かわいそうだが、カワニナの殻はカナヅチで割る。
中学時代、千匹は殺したはず。
メスの保育嚢
これはオスの精子を一時的に貯めておく器官。
その中身を顕微鏡で覗くと
カワニナの精子の姿が見える。
で、この精子が同じ形をしていない。
「ダイコン型」「ネギ型」「タマネギ型」「イカ型」
適当に命名したが、大きく４種類に分類できる。
尻尾の本数も一定していない。
単体の動物の精子が数種類あるという話は
じつはあるのだが、聞いたことがなかった。
どうなっているのだ？
途中を省略して、この研究発表が
なぜか県知事賞を受賞してしまった。
結局、この伝統あるカワニナの研究で母校の科学部は
県知事賞を前後合わせて三度受賞することになる。
少子化の影響により母校が廃校になる年、
これまでの部活動の集大成として研究成果をまとめ
新聞社主催の全国科学研究発表コンクールに応募。
最優秀賞を受賞した、と聞いた。
勢いで、カワニナの本まで記念出版された。
その記事の執筆の一部を頼まれたりもした。
現在、カワニナの姿を故郷で見つけることは難しい。
田中角栄の日本列島改造論ブームで
必要もないような道路工事があちこちで始まり
カワニナは川に棲めなくなったのだ。
ホタルの光も、二十年以上前の墓参りの時、
弱々しく一匹だけ光るのを見たきり。
そして、母校の廃校跡地には
中越地震の時、被災者用仮設住宅が建った。

Black Snail Research
In junior high school, I belonged to a science club.
The study was traditionally determined to be black snail.
Black snail is a snail
that lives in a stream and feeds on firefly larvae.
At that time, fireflies were still common.
We put matting on the riverside,
prepared blankets and food and drinks,
and “watched 24 hours” like a camp.
The movement of multiple black snails
with marks is continuously checked
every unit time for 24 hours.
When I was in third grade,
there were only two members.
For the time being, I was a general manager,
but there was no leadership
and I just played in the science room after school.
However, the activity results must remain.
If we don't make a research presentation
after summer vacation...
After we started the summer vacation,
we started searching for research themes.
And we decided to study the sperm of black snail
as a junior high school student.
It looks pitiful,
but the black snail shell is divided by the hammer.
I should have killed more than a thousand of them
during my junior high school days.
There is a vesicula seminis
near the female marsupium organ,
which temporarily stores male sperm.
If you look inside the microscope with a microscope,
you can see the sperm of black snail.
And these sperm don't have the same shape.
"Radish type" "Long onion type"
"Onion type" "Squid type"
Although named appropriately,
they can be broadly classified into four types.
The number of tails is not constant.
There is actually a story that
there are several types of sperm from a single animal,
but I have never heard of it.
What is going on?
I skipped the process, and for some reason
this research presentation won
the prefectural governor's award.
In the end, my old junior high school science club
won the prefectural governor's award
three times for this traditional black snail study.
In the year when my old junior high school was closed
due to the declining birthrate,
junior students put together their research results
as a compilation of their past club activities
and applied for
a national scientific research announcement competition
sponsored by a newspaper company.
I heard that it won the first prize.
With a momentum,
a black snail book was commemoratively published.
I was asked to write part of the article.
Currently, it is difficult to find a black snail
in my hometown.
Due to Tanaka Kakuei's boom
in remodeling the Japanese archipelago,
unnecessary road construction began here and there,
and black snail stopped giving up on the river.
The firefly's light has only been seen weakly
when one visits the grave more than 20 years ago.
And in my old junior high school abandoned school,
there was a temporary housing
for the victims of the Mid Niigata Prefecture Earthquake.
