未開の土地に小さな部族があった。
貧しい部族ではあったが
唯一、古くから伝わる宝があった。
「犀の角」という名の笛である。
犀の角の形をした縦笛。
大昔、天から降りたと伝えられている。
これを吹くことを許されているのは
部族の中でも選ばれた者。
長となるよう定められた男だけである。
しかも、この笛を一度吹いたら
もう二度と吹いてはならないのだ。
正しくは、一度吹いたら
もう二度と吹けなくなるらしい。
その理由は謎とされている。
満月の晩、老いた長は皆を呼び集めた。
そして、集まった皆の前で
ある若者に犀の角を手渡した。
長は草原の上に浮かぷ月を指さし、
行け、と若者に合図をした。
若者はうなずき、草原の向こうへ消えた。
季節が流れ、やがて若者は戻ってきた。
ただし、もう彼はただの若者ではなかった。
この部族の長なのであった。

the old chief summoned everyone.

he handed the rhinoceros horn to a young man.
The chief pointed to the moon floating
on the meadow and signaled the young man to go.
The young man nodded
and disappeared across the meadow.
As the seasons passed, the young people returned.
However, he was no longer just a young man.
He was the chief of this tribe.
