ふと思い出した。
それは遠い昔に夢で見たかもしれない
というほどの、ほんのかすかな記憶なのだ。
断崖絶壁にある洞窟居住地。
鍾乳洞のような自然の空洞を利用したものらしい。
壁面にあいた穴を窓として見える正面の風景は
こちら側と同じような形状の穴だらけの断崖絶壁。
その隙間は、上も下も霞んで見えないほど高く深い。
たとえるなら、いびつで巨大な先史時代のマンモス団地か。
アリの巣を連想させる洞窟内で出会う半裸の住民は
人間に似ているが、どことなく違う。
その若者は考えていた。
鳥のように空中を飛べないものか、と。
そうすれば、向こう側へ行ける。
向こう側には、時折り見かける気になる少女がいる。
翼のようなものを両腕に付けたらどうだろう。
しかし、その考えは古老らが否定する。
飛べずに落下して二度と帰らぬ者たちを知っているから。
しかし、若者は諦めきれない。
なんとか工夫して････
物語は続くが、その先はどうも思い出せない。

Memory of a Cave Residence
