暗く長い廊下の向こうには石炭置き場がある。
その当時の学校のストーブは電気でも石油でもなくて
石ころの石炭を燃やしていたのだ。
崩れた崖のような黒い石炭の斜面をスコップで掘り
銀色のブリキのバケツに移す。
そして、それを教室まで運び
ストーブの脇にある木箱に移す。
その日の当番の仕事だったが
僕はこの仕事、わりと嫌いではなかった。
誰かがやらねばならない仕事だったし
それゆえ皆に感謝もされたから。
もちろん、そんなに好きなはずもなかったけれど。

Dark Long Corridor
Beyond the dark long corridor is a coal yard.
The school stove at that time was neither electricity nor oil,
it was burning stone coal.
We dig a black coal slope like a broken cliff with a scoop
and transfer it to a silver tin bucket.
And we take it to the classroom
and move it to the wooden box beside the stove.
It was the job of the person on duty that day,
but I didn't hate this job.
It was a job someone had to do,
and so everyone would appreciate it.
Of course, I didn't like that much.
