折り紙

気まぐれに　
鶴を折ろうとして　

折り方をすっかり忘れていることに　
今　気づいた　

三角に折ったり　
ひし形に折ったり　

きれいにたたんで裏返したり　
おしまいに　息を入れて膨らませたり　

幼い頃　
なにが面白くて折り紙をしたのか　

と言うと　

なんでもない一枚の紙が　
ただ折るだけで　

舟とか兜とか　人形とか飛行機とか
いろんなものに変わるから　

でも　たとえそれが　
どんな形をしていようと　

やはり　なんでもない　

ただの一枚の紙でしか
あり得ないのに

Origami

I just noticed that
I was trying to fold a crane on a whim
and forgot how to fold it.

I folded it into a triangle,
folded it into a diamond, folded it neatly
and turned it over, and finally breathed in
and inflated it.

What was interesting about origami when I was young
is that a piece of paper that is nothing
but a piece of paper can be transformed into a boat,
a helmet, a doll, an airplane, and so on.

But no matter what shape it takes,
it can only be a piece of paper that is nothing.
