彼女は段ボール箱なのだった。
宅配便とかで届いた荷物の梱包材を捨てもせず
部屋の片隅に溜めておいたら、生まれてしまったのだ。
「困るなあ」
僕が呟くと
「そうよね。困るわよね」
波状の断面をゆがめ、彼女は悲しげな顔をした。
途端に心がざわつく。
「いやいや。早く処分しなかった僕が悪いんだけどね」
しかし、このままにしてもおけない。
なんとかしなければ。
とりあえず、彼女の素材の段ボールについて調べてみた。
19世紀イギリスにおいて、当時流行していたシルクハットの
内側の汗を吸い取るために開発されたのだそうだ。
また、腐食性ガスがわずかながら発生するので
電子部品の長期保存には向かないとのこと。
由緒あるのはかまわないが、腐食性はいただけないな。
「あの、私、出ていきます」
僕の心を読んだのか、彼女の方から申し出てくれた。
「そうかい。悪いね。そうしてもらえると助かるな」
彼女のために玄関ドアを開けてやる。
「大丈夫かい？」
「････大丈夫です」
「段ボール箱だもんね」
「ええ。段ボール箱ですから」
そうして段ボール箱の彼女は出ていった。
見送るために庭に出て、僕は曇り空を見上げる。
雨が降っていないのが、せめてもの幸いだ。
