訪れるはずの友人の姿は家の中にない。
まだ到着していないのかもしれない。
玄関から首を突き出して外を眺める。
庭の端に自転車が五台も置いてある。
見慣れぬデザイン。最新型であろう。
どうやら兄の客が来ているらしい。
母の話では、全員が外国人で
日本語を学んでいるのだそうだ。
兄たちの話し声が聞こえてくる。
テレビのある応接室には誰もいない。
おそらく二階の兄の部屋に集まっているのだ。
テレビには青白い画面が映っている。
観る者のいない、つけっぱなしのテレビ。
我慢ならず、リモコンのスイッチをOFFにする。
なぜか消えないので、本体のスイッチを切る。
それでも消えないので、電源コードを抜く。
なのに、どういうわけか青白い画面は消えてくれない。
諦めて応接室を出ようとして、ふと不安になる。
あの青白いテレビ画面を観ていたのは誰だ？
兄たちではなく、この私ではなかったか？

Pale Screen
There is no figure of my friend
who should visit in the house.
He may not have arrived yet.
I stick my head out of the front door and look out.
There are five bicycles on the edge of the garden.
Unfamiliar design. It will be the latest model.
Apparently my brother's customer is coming.
According to my mother, all of them are foreigners
and are learning Japanese.
I hear the voices of my brothers.
No one is in the drawing room with a TV.
Probably they are gathered
in my brother's room on the second floor.
There is a pale screen on the TV.
There is no viewer to watch the TV,
which is kept on.
I can't stand it,
and switch off the remote control.
For some reason it doesn't disappear,
so I switch off the unit.
It still doesn't go away,
so I unplug the power cord.
For some reason,
the pale screen doesn't go away.
When I gave up
and tried to leave the reception room,
I suddenly became anxious.
Who was watching that pale TV screen?
Wasn't this person me, not my brothers?
