ある寒い冬の夜、ある交差点において
大型トラックの窓から魔法瓶が捨てられた。
それを拾ったのはホームレスの乞食。
魔法瓶が欲しかったのだ。
乞食が栓を抜くと 魔法瓶の中から仔猫が出てきた。
なんということはない。
魔法瓶ごと捨て猫だったのだ。
乞食には猫を飼うつもりなどない。
むしろ猫に飼われたいくらいだった。
でも、コンビニのゴミ箱から拾った残飯をやると
仔猫は乞食から離れなくなった。
寄り添う痩せた仔猫のために
善良なる通行人たちは乞食に小銭を投げた。
仔猫はときどき信号機を見上げたものだ。
赤青、赤青、赤青････繰り返す。
乞食の体が冷たくなった朝、
いつまでも仔猫は鳴いていた。
乞食の亡骸は持ち去られ
形見の魔法瓶は処分された。
そして、その交差点に
もう仔猫の姿を見かけることはなくなった。
Cat Thermos
One cold winter night, at an intersection,
a thermos was thrown out of the window of a large truck.
A homeless beggar picked it up.
He wanted a thermos.
When he pulled out the cork,
a kitten came out of the thermos.
It doesn't matter.
It was an abandoned cat along with the thermos bottle.
He has no intention of getting a cat.
Rather, he wanted to be kept by a cat.
But when he fed the leftover food he picked up
from the bin at the convenience store,
the kitten stuck with him.
The good passers-by threw coins at the beggars
for the skinny kitten to snuggle up to.
The kitten would sometimes look up at traffic lights.
Red-blue, red-blue, red-blue, and so on.
In the morning when the beggar's body became cold,
the kitten continued to cry.
The beggar's corpse was taken away
and the keepsake thermos was disposed of.
And the kitten was no longer seen at that intersection.
