物体間の接触面では必ず摩擦が起こる。
摩擦は物が削れたり壊れたりする原因となる。
物と物とが接近せねばならない状況において
望まぬ接触を極力避けんとするが潤滑油の役目である。
液体として分子量の大きな油は粘性が高く、皮膜が丈夫。
このため多くの機械装置の潤滑には油が利用される。
また電気的性質が中性ゆえ、機械装置に利用する場合
金属の錆（酸化）を誘発させないなど都合良い。
この性質を例えとして、物事が円滑に運ばれるための
仲立ちとなる対象を指す言葉としても使われる。
利害の反する両者の直接の対峙を回避させるのが
その存在の主な本分であると思われる。

as liquid has high viscosity and durable film.
For this reason,
oil is used for lubricating many mechanical devices.
Also, due to the neutral nature
of the electrical properties,
it is convenient, for example,
not to induce rust (oxidation)
of the metal when it is used in a mechanical device.
By using this property as an example, it is also used
as a term referring to an object that serves
as an intermediary for things to be carried smoothly.
It is believed
that avoiding direct confrontation of both sides
of the interest is the main part of its existence.
