その古い時計台は離れ小島に建っている。
小島には時計台守りの老人が住んでおり
この老人の他に住人はいない。
時計台のネジを巻くのが老人の仕事だが

それでも毎日、老人は時計台に登る。
くる日もくる日も時計台のネジを巻く。
旅の途中の船が時間に迷わぬように
急ぐ船が時間に振りまわされぬように。
もっとも、船はめったに小島の近くを通らない。
それでも老人は、ネジ巻きを欠かさない。
時々、老人は岸辺にひとりたたずむ。
そこから果てしない時の流れを眺める。
はるかな遠い未来が
いつしか近い未来になる。
やがて未来は現在になり
すぐに現在は過去にかわってしまう。
近い過去はさらに遠い過去へと続く。
どこまで続くのか、果ては見えない。
いつもながら美しいものだ
と老人は思う。
この時の流れを止めてはいけない。
誰かがネジを巻かなければならない。
そんなふうに老人は確信するのだった。
それから老人は、時計台の文字盤に目をやる。
もうすぐ一日が終わろうとしている。
ううん、と老人は背伸びをする。
「明日もいっぱいネジを巻くんだ」
そんな老人のつぶやきが、海のかなたへ消える。
