ここは山寺の墓地。
若者がひとり、穴を掘っていた。
墓穴を掘るのが彼の仕事だった。
ひどく不機嫌な顔をしていた。
「その仕事は大変だろう」
暇そうな老人が声をかけてきた。
「あまり楽しくなさそうだな」
若者は老人を無視して穴を掘り続ける。
「望んだ仕事ではあるまい」
老人はひとり喋り続ける。
「老いてから後悔するぞ」
説教好きな老人らしい。
穴の底から若者が見上げた。
「ここに埋められたいのか」
老人は嬉しそうに見下ろした。
「まだまだ先の話だ」
若者は舌打ちする。
「誰が墓穴を掘ればいいんだ」
「遺族が掘ればいい」
「まったく遺族がいなければ」
「坊主が掘ればいい」
「爺さん。あんた、何者だ」
「この寺の住職さ」
「坊主か。なら、あんたが掘れ」
「これはどなたのものかな」
「おれの墓穴だ」
To Dig a Grave
This is the temple cemetary in the mountain.
A young man alone was digging a hole.
It was his job to dig a grave.
He had a badly grumpy face.
"The work will be hard."
An old man leisurely spoke.
"It looks like it will not be much fun."
The young man keeps digging holes,
ignoring the old man.
"There is no job you wanted."
The old man keeps on talking alone.
"You will regret it when you are old."
It seems to be an old senior favorite sermon.
That young man looked up from the bottom of the hole.
"Do you want to be buried here?"
The old man looked over with joy.
"It is still ahead of me."
Young people tongue.
"Who should dig up the grave?"
"The surviving family should dig it."
"What if there are no bereaved at all?"
"The monk should dig it."
"Old man, who are you?"
"The priesthood of this temple."
"If you are a monk, you dig."
"Whose grave is this?"
"It is my grave."
