場面は夜の病室なのだった。
家に帰らず看病していたとすると
おそらく身内の者が入院していたのだろう。
それが誰だったのか思い出せないが
きっと大切な人だったはずだ。
病室にはベッドがいくつか並んでいた。
つまり個室ではなかったわけだ。
小さな照明はあったが、暗かった。
就寝時間らしい。深夜だろうか。
なぜか僕は病室の床に座っていた。
毛布を敷いていたかもしれない。
壁にもたれていたような気もする。
とにかくベッドの陰になる場所だった。
ひとりの看護婦が目の前に立っていた。
ベッドの患者を見下ろすようにして
なにか調べているような仕草だった。
体温とか脈拍とか、そんなものだと思う。
彼女は僕に気づいていなかった。
なのに嬉しそうに微笑んだりする。
僕は瞬きもせずに彼女を見つめていた。
彼女はなにか悩んでる様子だった。
ちょっと考えてから彼女は決めた。
なにか自分の手のひらに書いたのだ。
あれはボールペンだったと思う。
温度とか脈拍数のようなものを
メモ代わりに手のひらに書いたのだ。
白くて柔らかであろう手のひらに。
それから彼女は病室を出ていった。
僕と僕の視線に最後まで気づきもしないで。

and was acting as if she was investigating something.
I think it's like temperature or pulse.
She was not aware of me.
Even though she smiles with joy.
I was staring at her without blinking.
She seemed to be in trouble.
After thinking a little, she decided.
She wrote something in her own palm.
I think that used a ballpoint pen.
She wrote something like temperature or pulse rate
on her palm instead of taking notes.
In the palm that will be white and soft.
Then she left the hospital room.
