雑木林を抜けると、ちょっとした広場があった。
近所の子どもたちの遊び場だった。
寺の裏山なので、墓場から続く小道もあった。
この広場の端に小さな家を建てた。
丸太や枯れ枝で組んだ掘っ立て小屋だった。
ささやかながらも、秘密基地なのだった。
あれは梅雨の時期だったろうか。
突然、にわか雨が降り出したのだ。
あわてて秘密基地の中に駆け込む。
「えらいわ。ぜんぜん雨がもらない」
すぐ耳もとで声がした。
同じ小学校に通う女の子だった。
「うん。屋根に葉っぱ、いっぱい重ねたからね」
ちょっと自慢だった。
屋根や地面を叩く雨音が、僕への拍手のようだった。
その時だった。
「ほら、見て。あれ」
「なに？」
それは、ヘビだった。
太くて黒い大蛇が這っていた。
大粒の雨に濡れた皮が、ぬらぬら光っていた。
すぐ目の前の地面をゆっくりと横切ってゆく。
こっちなんか見向きもしない。
「立派ね。すごいわ」
彼女は興奮していた。
小さく拍手さえしていた。
僕は怯えていた。
だから、なんにも言えなかった。
その黒い尻尾が草かげに隠れてしまうまで。

Secret Base
As I passed through the miscellaneous tree,
there was a small square.
It was a playground for children in the neighborhood.
Since there is a mountain behind the temple,
there was a trail that continued from the graveyard.
I built a small house at the end of this square.
It was an excavated hut built with logs and dead branches.
Although it was modest, it was a secret base.
Was that the time of the rainy season?
Suddenly, showers started to rain.
Rushed into the secret base.
"You are great, it will not rain at all."
A voice caught my ears right away.
It was a girl who attended the same elementary school.
"Yeah, I leafed many leaves on the roof."
I was a little proud.
The raindrops striking the roof
and the ground seemed to applaud me.
It was then.
"Look, see, that one."
"What?"
It was a snake.
A thick black snake was crawling.
The large grain wet skin of the rain was shining all over.
It will slowly cross the ground in front of us.
It does not look something here.
"It's fine, it's amazing!"
She was excited.
She even had a small applause.
I was frightened.
So, I could not say anything.
Until that black tail hides behind grass.
