増改築が繰り返された複合ビル。
わけのわからない店があちらこちらにある。
百貨店をひっくり返したような景観。
ここに私がいるのは帽子を買うためだ。
帽子なんか嫌いなのに、おかしなこと。
いつしか私は迷子になっていた。
エスカレーターがいたるところにある。
しかも曲がっているものばかり。
上昇している途中で下降し始めるもの。
ぐるりと回って元の場所に戻るものまである。
ふざけているとしか思えない。
私は困ってしまった。
店員らしき若者に道を尋ねてみた。
「ええと、そこへ行くためにはですね、
ちょっと口では説明できないので」
親切にも彼は、私と一緒に歩いて
帽子売り場への道を教えてれると言う。
いくつかエスカレーターを乗り継ぐ。
「あなた、ここの店員さんですよね」
「いいえ。ここの住人なんです」
内心の驚きが顔に出ないよう
私は目を伏せなければならなかった。
「さあ、ほとんど着きましたよ」
「ああ、どうもありがとうございます」
「あとは半歩進んで一歩下がれば着きます」
「もう大丈夫です。助かりました」
一歩進んだところにエスカレーターがあった。
それに乗ろうとすると、若者が叫んだ。
「違います。一歩でなくて半歩です」
あわてて私は足を引っ込めた。
深呼吸してから、慎重に半歩進んでみた。
そこに別のエスカレーターがあった。
進んだ逆の方向に向かって動いている。
（ああ、これが「戻る」という意味か）
そのように私は納得して
そのエスカレーターに乗ろうとする。
すると、ふたたび若者は叫んだ。
「違います。そこから一歩戻るのです」
もう私は途方に暮れるしかないのだった。
Escalators
A complex building
with repeated extension and reconstruction.
There are many shops where I do not know why.
It looks like a department store has been turned over.
I am here to buy a hat.
Even though I hate hats, it is funny.
Before long I was lost.
There are escalators everywhere.
What's more, it's just crooked.
It starts to descend on the way up.
All the way back to the original place.
They only seem to be playful.
I was in trouble.
I asked the shop assistant a way.
"Oh, to get there,
I can not explain it with my mouth."
He is kind enough to say that he can walk with me
and show me the way to the hat department.
We transit some escalators.
"You are the clerk here, right?"
"No. I'm a resident here."
I had to keep my eyes down so that
my inner surprise was not expressed on my face.
"Now, we almost arrived."
"Oh, thank you so much."
"Afterward you go half a step
and get down one step lower."
"It's alright. I was saved."
There was an escalator in the place
where it advanced one step.
The young man shouted when trying to get on it.
"No, it's a step, not a step."
In a hurry I withdrew my foot.
After taking a deep breath,
I carefully proceeded for half a step.
There was another escalator there.
It is moving in the opposite direction it advanced.
(Oh, this means "return.")
That's why I understand
and try to get on that escalator.
Then the young man shouted again.
"No, you're going back one step from there."
I had no choice but to be at a loss.
