ようやく下宿にたどり着く。
建物の傾きが夜目にもわかる。
狭い玄関で靴を脱ぐ。
共同なので、下駄箱に入れる。
滑り落ちそうな階段を上る。
古い木造なので一段ごとに軋む。
階段が終わると廊下が始まる。
やはり一歩ごとに軋む。
どうも確信が持てない。
はて、自分の部屋はどこであったか。
しばらくさまよう。
こんなに廊下は長かったっけ？
やがて、いかにもここ、と思える部屋を見つける。
それにしても、疲れていた。
どうして疲れたのか、どうも思い出さない。
柱との間に隙間のある引き戸を開ける。
なぜか施錠されていない。
四畳半の和室の中央に布団を敷いて
見知らぬ男が寝ている。
困ってしまう。
帰る場所を間違えたのか？
多くもない家具調度には個性がない。
とにかく眠い。
男が起きないよう静かに服を着替える。
着替えた服に違和感はない。
押入れで寝るためにふすまを開ける。
見知らぬ女が寝ている。
わけがわからない。
ともかく、このふすまを外そう。
なんとか敷居の上で寝るしかあるまい。

Old Boarding House
