キリストや聖母が彫られた板などを人々に踏ませた。
その板を「踏み絵」と呼び、踏むのを拒んだ場合
その者をキリスト教徒として逮捕、処罰した。
初期の段階では、それなりの効果はあったようだ。
しかし、次第に隠れキリシタンの間で
「内面で信仰さえすれば善い」という考えが広まった。
やがて、役人の前では堂々と絵を踏むが
密かに神に祈って許しを請う信者が現れ始める。
そのため後期には、踏み絵によるキリシタン狩りの効果
必ずしも上がらなかった、と言われている。
さて、時代は下り、あろうことかあるまいことか
現代において踏み絵が実施されることになった。
なんと、法的な通過儀礼として
今年度の成人式から制度を導入するという。
あっさり国会も通過した。
じつに呆れた話である。
もちろん今時、キリシタン狩りはない。
ただし、何を踏ませるかは極秘。
