宵闇に目を閉じて考えても
さっぱり面白いことが浮かばない。
こんなふうに空しい夜を 私は
「アンモナイトな夜」と呼んでいる。
それなりに繁栄していた時期もあったのに
やがて絶滅してしまう古代生物。
地質年代区分 古生代ペルム紀の最後に
いったい何が起きたのか。
少なくとも大規模な火山噴火はあったらしい。
海底でも何事かあった可能性は残る。
海中酸素が減り 二酸化炭素が増え
ともかく生存するには過酷な環境になった。
わずかに残った種も 中生代の最後には
巨大隕石の落下により 完全に絶滅したそうな。
三億五千万年の夢のかけら。
化石や宝石として残れば まだいい。
タコやイカの仲間の頭足類。
その軟体部の痕跡は ほとんど現存しない。
そんなアンモナイトな夜が 今宵もまた
静かに時の地層の隙間に埋もれる。

Ammonite Night
Even if I close my eyes in the evening
and think about something,
nothing interesting comes to mind.
I call such a vacant night "Ammonite Night."
An ancient creature that will eventually
become extinct even though it was prosperous.
What happened at the end of the Paleozoic Permian
in geological age divisions?
There seems to be at least a large volcanic eruption.
The possibility that
something happened on the seabed remains.
Underwater oxygen has decreased,
carbon dioxide has increased,
and it has become a harsh environment
to survive anyway.
Slightly remaining species
seemed to be completely extinct
at the end of the Mesozoic period
due to the fall of a huge meteorite.
Fragment of 350 million years dream.
If it remains as a fossil or jewel, it is still good.
Cephalopods of octopus and squid.
The traces of the soft body hardly exist.
Such an ammonite night is buried quietly
in the gaps of the formations tonight.
