下宿の廊下の奥に灰色の猫がいる。
暗くてはっきり見えないが
ふたつの小さな眼が金色に光っている。
あいつに入られたら、追い出すのは大変だ。
引き戸を開けると同時に部屋に滑り込み、
すばやく戸をピシャリと閉める。
けれど、あまりにも建物が古かった。
引き戸と柱の合わせ目に大きな隙間があり、
そこから廊下がよく見えるのだ。
やはり灰色猫の姿が闇に浮かぶ。
目を凝らすと、灰色の鼠のように見える。
こんなに小さくては、戸の隙間から
部屋の中に入られてしまうに違いない。
なんとかしなければならない。
あせってしまい、とりあえず
近くにあった本で隙間を埋めようとする。
すると灰色鼠は
こちらの動きに興味を持ったらしい。
いそいそと戸の隙間に近寄ってきた。
ところが、それは鼠でもないようなのだ。
顔が細長くて、馬のように見える。
しかも灰色ではなく、白と黒の縞模様。
白黒の縞の馬ならゼブラである。
どうも怒っているらしい。
その証拠に、いなないている。
ただし、なぜか声は聞こえない。
こんな小さなゼブラが部屋に入ろうとするのを
どうやって阻止できよう。
こんな薄い本では役に立たない。
しかし、もっと厚い本を取ろうと移動すれば
きっと怒れるゼブラが部屋に侵入する。
さらに悪いことには、どういうつもりなのか
戸の隙間が徐々に拡がっているのだ。
ううん、困った。
じつにまったく困ってしまった。
廊下の奥の部屋、つまり隣の空き部屋に
誰かいるような気配がする。
大家から話を聞いていないが
新しい住人でも入ったのだろうか。
その時、隣の部屋の引き戸が開き、
白熱電球の明かりが廊下にあふれた。

from entering the room?

the angry zebra will surely break into the room.
