誕生日、正確には前日に
ケーキをもらった。
先にあげた誕生日プレゼントの
お返しではあるけれど
考えてみると
誕生日にケーキをもらった記憶がない。
なにしろ子どもの頃は
誕生日を祝う習慣がなかったし
誕生日を祝ってくれる親しい人も
いないわけではなかったけれど
タイミングが悪かったり
ケーキではなかったり････
それはともかく
職場の食堂でもらったのだけれど
ナイフもスプーンも見当たらず
仕方なく割り箸で食べた。
キャンドルも付いていたけど
さすがに周囲の目が恥ずかしく
自宅で点けるから
と約束をした。
そして誕生日の今日、
休み明けに問われて
嘘を貫き通す自信もないので
自宅にてキャンドルを灯した。
せっかくだからムードを出そうと
室内の照明は消した。
ただし面倒臭いので
パソコンのバックライトはそのまま。
マッチもライターも持ってないので
火はガスレンジを点火して移した。
もうケーキは食べたから
どこにもなくて
キャンドルは左手の指で挟んで支持。
太いキャンドルは十の桁
細いキャンドルは一の桁とのこと。
こんなツギハギだらけの
しまりのないバースデーだけど
誕生日のキャンドルライトは
とてもきれいだった。
とってもとっても
とってもきれいだった。
このことは休み明けに
ぜひ彼女に伝えてやろう。
Birthday Candles
I had a cake on my birthday, exactly the day before.
It's in return for the birthday gift I gave her earlier,
but when I think about it,
I don't remember having the cake for my birthday.
After all, when I was a child,
I had no custom of celebrating birthdays.
I wasn't without close friends
celebrating my birthday,
but the timing wasn't right and it wasn't a cake...
Anyway, I got it at the cafeteria at work,
but I couldn't find a knife or spoon,
so I ate it with disposable chopsticks.
A candle was also included,
but I was ashamed of the eyes around me,
so I promised her that I could light it at home.
And on my birthday today,
I didn't have the confidence to go through the lie
when asked after the holidays,
so I lit a candle at home.
I turned off the lights in the room
to get out of the mood.
However, it was annoying,
so I left the backlight of the computer as it was.
I didn't have a match or a lighter,
so the fire ignited the gas stove and transferred it.
I ate the cake, so it was nowhere to go
and I supported the candle
by pinching it with my left finger.
Thick candles have ten digits,
and thin candles have one digit.
It was such a patchy, untidy birthday, but
the candlelight on my birthday was very beautiful.
It was very very beautiful.
