今は昔、東北のさる城下町。
夜中に若い女が行方知れずになる
または惨殺されるという事件が相次いだ。
さらに事件前後、馬のいななきが聞こえた
あるいは馬の首が火の玉のように闇夜を走り抜けた
などと言う多数の目撃談が番所に寄せられた。
ある夜、腕に覚えある武士が役職で夜回りをしていると
はたして闇の向こうから赤黒い馬の首が駆けてくる。
すれ違いざま、あっぱれ武士が袈裟斬りすれば
馬の首は折れるように消え、同時に遠く絶叫が響いた。
以来、忌まわしき事件は途絶えた。
真相はついに究明されることなく
月日とともにうやむやになってしまったが
同夜同刻、さる高名なる儒学者がひとり
自宅の寝所で股間を血塗れにして転げまわっていた
と、しばし噂になった。
Horse Neck
