飼っていた鼠を一匹、紙袋に入れたまま
駐輪場の自転車の前カゴの中に置き忘れてしまった。
曇りか、まだしも雪でも降れば良かったのだろう。
真冬に晴れたものだから、昨夜はひどく冷え込んだ。
翌朝、紙袋の中で、鼠は凍死していた。
もうカチカチで、完全に凍っていた。
丸くなって、陶器の置物みたいだった。
どうして逃げようとしなかったんだろう。
こんな紙袋、破るのは簡単なはずなのに。
普段なら段ボールだって穴あけちゃうくせに。
もし僕が鼠の立場だったら、どうだろう。
紙袋の中で、ひとりぼっち。
いくら待っても誰も来てくれない。
すっかり忘れられてしまったらしい。
ものすごく寒い。
寒くてしかたない。
そうだ。
やっぱり寒かったからだ。
こんな薄っぺらな紙袋の中でも
外にいるより寒くない。
袋の中の鼠には袋がとてもありがたく感じられて
とても破ることができなかったんだ。
あまりにも寒すぎたから、昨夜は。
それで逃げようともしなかったんだ、きっと。
どこにも逃げるところがなかったからだ。
それで、そのまま凍え死んだんだ。
こんな誰もいない寂しいところに
うっかり僕が置き忘れてしまったものだから。

Mouse in a Bag
I left one mouse I had in my paper bag
and left it in the basket in front of the bicycle
at the bicycle parking lot.
It would have been nice
if it was cloudy or even snowy.
It was sunny in the middle of winter,
so it was extremely cold last night.
The next morning, the mouse was frozen
to death in a paper bag.
It was hard and it was completely frozen.
It was round and looked like a pottery figurine.
Why didn't it try to escape?
Such a paper bag should be easy to tear.
Normally, it's cardboard,
but you have to punch it.
What if I were in the position of the mouse?
I'm alone in a paper bag.

it's not colder than outside.
