どうやら僕はこの店の従業員らしいのだ。
正社員でなければ派遣社員なのだろう。
この店は百円均一みたいな品揃えの雑貨店。
僕は今、商品陳列を改めている。
いくつか重なった紙コップのセットが
通明なポリ袋の中に入っている。
それがあちらこちらの棚に散らばって
不必要と思えるほどたくさん陳列されている。
この紙コップのセットが商品なわけだが
ポリ袋の規格サイズと合わないものがあるらしい。
若干きついのだそうだ。
店長らしき男とアルバイトの女の子と僕の三人で
そのきつく入っている紙コップのセットを捜索している。
見つけたら、きついポリ袋の中から取り出して
正常なサイズのポリ袋に入れ替えなければならない。
なぜかそのような状況に陥っている。
このいかにもつまらない作業を行いながら
ふと僕の頭の中に疑問が浮かぶ。
曲がりなりにも紙コップのセットは
どうにかポリ袋の中に入っているわけである。
それをわざわざ苦労して見つけ出して
外装を交換するというのはどういうことだろう。
それを僕が口にしたのか僕の心を読んだのか
店長が「確かにそうだよな」と言う。
「これから並べる新品から正せば良いわけで
古いのを今さら改める必要はないよな」
店長はなにやらしきりに感心した風で
女の子にも「やめろやめろ」と指示する。
あっさり仕事が片づいた。
ありもしない仕事が消えた、と言うべきか。
なにはともあれ良かった、と僕は胸をなでおろす。

A man like a store manager, a girl from a part-time job,
and me are searching for a tight set of paper cups.
If found, it must be removed from the tight plastic bag
and replaced with a normal size plastic bag.
We are in such a situation for some reason.
Suddenly, a question arises in my head
while doing this tedious work.
The paper cup set is incomplete
but somehow in a plastic bag.
What does it mean to find it and replace it?
“I'm sure it is,” the manager says,
whether I talked about it, or he read my heart.
“It's better to correct the new ones
that will be arranged in the future,
and there is no need to change the old ones now.”
The store manager was so impressed with the style
that he told the girl to stop.
The work was cleared up.
Should it be said that a job
that does not exist has disappeared?
Anyway it was good, I stroked my chest.
