画面には男の片手だけが見える。
一枚のコインを親指の爪で弾き、打ち上げる。
落ちてきたそれを受け取り、再び打ち上げる。
「今度こそ、あいつを始末しろ」
手の持ち主の声がする。
悪の組織のボスであろう。
彼の声は聞こえるが、決して顔は見せない。
男の片手はコインを打ち上げ続ける。
「失敗は許さんぞ」
････以上、古いTVアニメの一場面である。
小学生だった当時の僕は
この謎の人物の片手に魅せられた。
正確に言うなら、片手による連続コイントス。
適当なコインを手に入れ、毎日のように練習した。
そのうち右手の親指の爪が変形してしまったほどだ。
おかげでかなり上達した。
指だけで1ｍくらい、腕も使えば10mは上がる。
低めに抑え、コインの回転速度を上げると
「ブーン」と音がする。
打ち上げ、受け取り、
セットを右手だけでスムーズに行えるようになり
やがて左手だけでもできるようになった。
その結果が表であろうが裏であろうが関係ない。
単純に上達する過程が楽しかったのだ。
で、このささやかな特技が人生において
役に立ったのかと言うと
うーん、ちょっと思いつかない。
せいぜい、この話を書くことができたくらいか。

Only one man's hand is visible on the screen.
His thumb claws flip a coin and launches it.
He takes it down and launches it again.

I can hear his voice, but I can never see his face.
One hand of man keeps launching coins.
"You can't fail."

When I was an elementary school student,
I was fascinated
by the one hand of this mysterious person.
To be precise,
it is a continuous coin toss with one hand.
I got suitable coins and practiced everyday.
As a result, my right thumb nail was deformed.
Thanks to that, I have improved considerably.
With my finger alone, it goes up about 1m,
and with my arm, it goes up 10m.
When I keep it low and spin up the coin,
it makes a humming noise.
I was able to launch it, receive it,
and set it smoothly with my right hand,
and eventually with my left hand.
It doesn't matter whether the result is front or back.
I simply enjoyed the process of improvement.
So, was this modest feat useful in your life?
