ドアチャイムが鳴ったので玄関へ向かう。
普段なら「なんでしょうか？」とまず問うものだが
この時はなぜかそのままドアを開けてしまう。
玄関ドアの前、共用階段の踊り場に
貧相な顔の若い男が立っていた。
彼はこのマンションの同じ住人。
だが、その名前がすぐに思い出せない。
なにやら問題が生じたらしく
管理組合役員である私のところに相談に来たらしい。
組合費の滞納の件であったか
何事かしばらく話し合ってから結論を出す。
「ところで」と彼が言う。
「理事長さんのお住まいはどこですか？」
おかしなことを言う。
私の住まいはここに決まっているではないか。
不審そうに首をかしげていると
「いえね、昨日の夜、4時過ぎに運動公園で････」
「私に会ったのですか？」
そう問いかけたのに彼は返事をしない。
夕暮れが迫っているのか、踊り場は暗い。
彼の表情がわかりにくくなっている。
というか、彼の姿さえ見えにくい。
いや、違う。
その姿の向こう側が透けて見えるのだ。
それどころか、今では玄関ドアの前に
もう誰もいない。
