なんとなく目が覚めた。
レースのカーテン越しの窓の外、ぼんやり薄暗い。
夕暮れの気配である。
（寝ながら考え事をして、そのまま眠ってしまったのだな）
そう思った。
（それとも眠ろうとしていて眠ったんだっけ？）
どうもよく思い出せない。
トイレに行き、キッチンで歯を磨き、顔を洗う。
それから畳の部屋に戻る。
万年床の上に座椅子を置き、座って腰まで毛布を掛ける。
そして考え事の続きをする。
なにかしら面白い話をひとつ考えねばならない。
それが日課になっている。
どうも頭がすっきりしない。
（今日は何をしたっけ？）
思い出そうとしてもはっきり思い出せない。
（いや、あれは昨日の話だよな）
窓の外は、相変わらず薄暗い。
（まさか････）
手もとの電波時計を持ち上げて見る。
（やっぱり！）
「午前」の表示。
そう言えば、かすかに雨音がする。
Signs of Dusk
I woke up somehow.
Outside the window through the lace curtains,
it was vaguely dim.
It is a sign of dusk.
(I thought while sleeping and fell asleep.)
I thought so.
(Or did I fall asleep trying to sleep?)
I can't remember very well.
I go to the bathroom, brush my teeth
and wash my face in the kitchen.
Then I go back to the tatami room.
I put a legless chair on the permanently unmade bed,
sit down and cover my waist with a blanket.
And I continue my thoughts.
I have to come up with an interesting story.
It has become my daily routine.
I can't seem to clear my head.
(What did I do today?)
I can't remember clearly even if I try.
(No, that was yesterday.)
It's still dark outside the window.
(No way...)
I pick up the radio clock in my hand and look at it.
(After all!)
It is displaying "A.M."
Come to think of it,
I can hear the faint sound of rain.
